the best option is to get this done in a salon. There is no way that putting a lighter colour over a darker colour will make it lighter. Colour does not lift colour. This is the biggest rule in hairdressing. You can get colours that lift virgin hair (no colour at all, not even temporary colours.) up to 4 shades. But this is a very risky thing to do yourself. Colours you buy in a shop is on colour and it has a little chart on it saying if your hair looks like this.... it will go to this...... But it NEVER comes out like that as its a general colour for everyone. In salon a colour can be made for you, with the correct peroxide, and application. When lightening its not just a case of slapping it on. Roots lighten faster then ends, so ends have to be done first then roots.

Plus from the home colours I have seen they always look really bad and make the hair look dull and lifeless after the conditioner has worn off.

Treat yourself have it done by someone who knows what they are doing. Us hairdresser are trained for 3 years and I have done a number or colour courses with Wella and loreal to get the full knowledge of colour that is needed. You cant get that out of a packet.

you'll need to get it done at a salon...where they, unfortunately, will have to bleach it to the desired lightness. you cant lighten your hair by simply putting a lighter color over it. sorry. :(
