Help with applying discreet fake tan?

I'm from Ireland, and believe me, people here do not know how to do their tan, so at the risk of looking ridiculous, i've never tried it. I've brown hair and pale skin. Although I get a nice colour in the summer, sort of tan on my arms and face, but my legs remain WHITE!
So I was wondering if I bought a light fake tan that comes like a cream and can gradually build up on my legs, and even dilute by mixing it with moisturiser, would I get a light natural looking colour? Nothing that would streak or take lots of maintenance, just something simple, that won't be obvious and especially ridiculous looking!

Any suggestions at all would be great, for product and/or application, and I have a love budget, supermarket or chemist stuff please!

I used to use the moisturisers you can get with added fake tan that builds up a tan gradually but I actually found them really hard to get even and they smelt really bad. I then decided to spend a bit more on actualy fake tan, I bought the St Tropez mousse which is £30 for a big bottle or £20 for a small. It may seem like alot but my tan was so even and lasted ages I have never looked back after buying this! Just make sure you exfoliate in the bath or shower and then moisturise before applying your tan with a mitt. They reccomend St Tropez exfoliator and moisturiser but there is no need to spend alot of money on those just use a regular one will be fine! Good luck...
