How do you get 50s curls if your hair is already curly?

I have tight spiral curls, and they're really messy. I tried straightening my hair once and then curling it, but it fell out almost immediately. Is there some way I can make my hair curl differently, or make it stay if I straighten it and then curl it?

the only other possible way would be a perm.

I have curley hair too. after I shampoo I use very big rollers for about 2 or 3 hrs, then I use a very big round brush and dry my hair very well with hair dryer. If I want my hair look as straight as Chinese girls, then I use my iron (that I use for my clothes) on very low heat on my hair (I put my head on the ironing board) then use hair spray a little

I'm sure you could get something at a beauty store that you could put on damp hair or something to change the curl structure.
