http://www.nappturality.com/Im African American and I wear my hair natural too. Anyways, when dealing with natural hair and trying to get it to grow, your main concern should be the health of your hair. So basically STOP thinking about how long it is and stressing over it. If you just focus on keeping it healthy, the length will magically come (I'm not kidding).
There are so many things you need to know to be able to take care of your hair, but I will just give you a quick overview and let you discover the others on those websites I gave you.
Your main concern when dealing with your hair should be balancing moisture with protein. Your hair needs both, but too much of one can ruin your hair. Moisture is the most important and will solve all of your frizz and managability problems. Make sure you are moisturizing your hair every couple days. Try co-washing (washing with conditioner instead of shampoo). Shampoo strips our hair of the moisture it needs. Try using just conditioner more often and only use shampoo a couple times a month. My favorite is Hello Hydration by Herbal Essences :)
Since your hair is natural and not relaxed like many women with ethnic hair, it contains pretty much all the protein it needs. Only do a protein treatment every two months or so (only if you absolutley need it).
Try not to use styling products with the following things: Alcohol, petroleum, mineral oil, & parabens
Alcohol, petroleum, and mineral oil will dry out your hair (often found in hair grease and most cheap styling gels). But ignore the alcohol in your shampoo and conditioner, it won't hurt you. These things are prob in your favorite products so check the labels before you buy.
Well thats all I can think of off the top of my head. Try those two websites at the beginning. Black hair media is my favorite, but avoid going to the "Hair Growth" section. Its mainly filled with relaxed women who do crazy stuff to make their hair grow. Instead go to the natural section. That is where you will find products and methods ment for your hair. Oh, and ignore those idiots at school. I have to deal with them too.
Good luck :)

Condition, Condition, Condition and do as little as possible to it. Just let it do it's thing and grow. Try not to use flat irons or blow dryers. It is recommended to get a small trim at least every 6-8 weeks. This will prevent split ends causing more breakage by getting caught on each other. Kerastase Oleo Relax or Oleo Curl are great products for very curly hair.

Here try these: ;)
This one you just spray on whenever. Mix in a spray bottle: water (alkaline if u want to straighten it) and a a tablespoon conditioner (u can also add some shine products, anti frizz serum, or heat protector. shake it up and spray a reasonable amount on ur hair. shake before each use.
Here are some fun hair masks to help with the strength and shine:
Mash 8 to 10 strawberries in a bowl and add 1 tbsp mayonnaise to it. Mix it well and gently massage it into your scalp. Make sure your hair is clean and damp. Cover your head with a warm towel and leave the mask on your head for about half an hour. Wash it off with a regular shampoo. Use this moisturizing hair mask once or twice a month.
Mix half a cup of you fattiest, cholesterol packed mayonnaise with 2 tbsp honey (for some shine) olive oil (to hydrate dry hair) or apple cider vineger (adds shine and health). Using a blender, mix the ingredients well. Apply in generous amounts onto the scalp. Wash it off after half an hour with a mild shampoo. This recipe makes a great hair mask conditioner. The smell of mayo can be really overwhelming so add a couple drops of coconut oil (reduces dandruff), almond oil (hydrate dry hair), or avocado oil (more hydration0. dont put too much or ull flatten ur hair.
Take the flesh of 1 ripe avocado and mash it well. Mix 1 tbsp honey and 1 tbsp olive oil. Blend the mixture well. Apply on the scalp and using a comb spread it well through your hair. Wash it off after 20-30 minutes. This is a good hair mask treatment that can be done once a week for acquiring shiny hair.
You can also rinse hair in apple cider vinegar, or lemon juice (if ur blonde). mix it with a little honey if u want.
HOT OIL TREATMENT: This is only for the driest hair, if your hair isnt really dry, this will make it look wet and feel really oily, unless u wash it out with 2 doses shampoo, which will really defeat the purpose of the treatment.
microwave 1/3 a cup olive oil, coconut oil, almond oil, or avocado oil until reasonably hot. comb through your hair until coated evenly. wrap hair in a warm or hot towel for 45 minutes. wash out with a little shampoo. condition if you do. (If you leave it on overnight, safety pin a towel onto your pillow; oil does not come off easily. If your towel gets cold, use a blow dryer to warm it up again)
