Smokey eyes, are typically done with dark colors, but you probably are looking for a relatively lighter one. Your skin tone is important. If you're fair a charcoal would be beautiful, if you're a medium tone, go for a smoky black-plum, if you're dark-skinned, a brown shade would be best.
Along with a dark color, to create a bright-eyed effect, buy a medium to to medium light shade in a related color. For charcoal for instance, use shimmery silver; plum, use a shimmery beige, and brown, use a shimmery cream.
Start by lining your eyes with a boldly with a jet black eyeliner. Use a heavy hand, don't be afraid! Then use a sponge tip or a q-tip to smudge the liner up your lid, starting a seamless smoky effect.
Then apply the dark shadow all over your eyelid, creating a v-shape as you move toward the outer corner. Do not go above the crease. With a brush or applicator, blend the shadow upwards into your crease and almost (not into) at the browbone area.
Use the light shimmery color around your inner corner, stop til you almost reach the iris of your eye. Then blend this with the dark smokey color.
Line your lower lid with the dark shadow, and connect it to the top lid.
Curl lashes and apply mascara. I highly recommend getting falsies. They add greatly to the "glamour" factor.
Then highlight your browbone with an eyeshadow color that is slightly lighter than your skin tone.
Voila, the perfect smokey;)
The kind of shadow you get depends on your budget. MAC is best of course, and they have a great selection of colors and their staff can help you choose the right one.
You can check out coastal scents, and revlon and maybelline is good as well.
Good luck!
