Just a thought... Well, at least here in Asia, no one thinks that makeup is trashy, its just well, makeup. There's nothing deep like "Hiding ones real face from the world" or "Using it as a tool to seduce men". For the former, its just plain inaccurate, as you can use your non-makeup face as a mask and fool people just as well (as in hiding your true personality), and for the latter, since men do not like makeup on women (according to responses in Yahoo! Answers), why is this adage even existing?

I think only super conservative people think that makeup is trashy. For the most part (in America, anyway), women just use makeup as another part of their daily wardrobe.
As as far as men saying that they don't like makeup on a woman, I think they're referring to the women who use makeup incorrectly - too heavy, completely wrong colors, bad application, etc. When the right shades are blended together and the makeup is natural and subtle (to the point where it almost looks like you're not wearing makeup), then it generally enhances features and women can actually look younger and healthier with it...which I think men would appreciate.
So I think the industry thrives because, as others have mentioned, the advertising is good. They have the best professional makeup artists doing the models' makeup, and then consumers try and imitate the look...although many people pretty much fail. But as long as they keep trying to look like models, the industry will never die.

Most people don't think makeup is trashy. I think in American culture, heavy and badly applied is trashy, but the majority of American women wear some amount of makeup and nobody says anything about it. The beauty industry thrives because it's very, very good at advertising.

if you know how to put on make up then it won't look trashy. some people just start using colors that don't work well with their skin and doesn't make them look good. beauty industry will keep thriving it's their job to get women to buy their products... that's how they make their money

I don't think people think makeup is tacky, if you wear your makeup naturally and do it right by just subtly defining your features rather than wearing unnatural colours all your face. If you wear makeup that looks neat and tidy, I don't think people are going to think your a joke or tacky because they know that you can actually apply it and your not just rushing to slap as much as possible on your face. Yeah, maybe men don't like it when women wear makeup, because they don't like them to hide their faces. I think it makes men uncomfortable because they have no need to wear makeup, so they never see why a women would either. Most people though, won't just stop wearing makeup but yes, I definately think that people need to calm down on the whole makeup thing and see it as something they might do if they have time, not something they HAVE to do and make so muh time for. People should be out their enjoying their lives, who cares if you don't look your best, at least you live your life.
