Are you over-sweating? You might need a stronger antiperspirant in that case.
Also, are your dresses usually dark in colour? If you are sweating quite a bit in your clothing, then the fabric combined with the sweat could be causing the added darkness (I've experienced this myself).
As for the itchiness, I'm assuming that is due to dryness. How drying is your body wash? What about your deodorant? Do you moisturize at night in the area, at least a few times a week? I use a prescription strength antiperspirant (Certain Dri) about 4 times a week, so on the off days I will usually moisturize. I find that if I don't, my pits are left feeling raw and dry.
Also, do you exfoliate your underarm area? If you have a facial scrub in the shower, next time you are in there, use a bit of the scrub on the area. Do that a few times for a few weeks to see if that helps, and if it does, consider buying a hydrating body scrub. I love the Soap And Glory Flake Away scrub, although it can be abrasive. If you have a loofah or an exfoliating glove, you could try that instead with a nice hydrating body wash, which my lead to more even results, as the underarm area is uneven in general (hence why it can be hard to get an even shave).

The darkening skin is more or less caused by the irritation. For the moment stop shaving and stop exfoliating that area. Go make an appointment with you doctor, just address your concerns and be sure to tell him when this started. Don't feel silly about asking, there is no harm in it.
For some women shaving or exfoliating their underarms causes darkening of the skin, I had a friend who has this problem. She would only shave when she needed to and the darkening did lighten a little but didn't go away entirely.
