I really want to try something new and low maintenance (I know dreads are hard to start, but they are overall low maintenance)

I would say no...they're a little gross and if you're looking for low-maintenance why start something high maitnance.
i think you should try it with the bottom part of your hair first just little pieces.
you have a pretty face, you can do whatever you choose, that isnt what i would go for, i would cut it short, like a bob... (:
I think you could definitely rock it xD
But it's up to you. You can always do them with gel first, then if you like it, redo them permanently.
