I need some advice about shopping at thrift stores. I'm getting some new clothes for when I got to France, and I've decided to go to a thrift store since I really don't want to spend too much. Any tips for shopping? I will not be able to make it out super early , so any tips would be great!

For thrift stores, you really have to search for cute things. If you aren't patient, you can forget thrift stores. But if you are, you might be surprised at what you find. And you don't need to get up super early. Make sure you inspect each article of clothing before buying it as well. And i think thats about it! Oh and don't put something down that you are "thinking about getting" because most of the time, it won't be there if you change your mind.

    Difficulty: Easy Instructions

    Step 1

Make a list. To make the most of your time at the thrift store, it's best to make a list of the items and clothing sizes for which you are looking. That way, you won't be overwhelmed and forget what it was you came to find.

    Step 2

Check the specials. Once you arrive at the thrift store, check to see if the store features daily specials before you begin shopping. Ask an associate if you don't readily see specials posted.

    Step 3

Begin shopping. Choose an item on your list and begin shopping. Some thrift stores have name brand clothing that is in excellent condition on separate racks. Clothing is usually grouped into clothing for men, women, and another section for children.

    Step 4

Inspect each item. Thrift stores will occasionally miss a rip or tear in a piece of clothing and place it on the rack. Check for rips, tears, holes, missing buttons, missing or sticky zippers, or discolorations. If the fix isn't something you can do yourself, put the item back on the rack.

    Step 5

Try it on if possible. Most thrift stores don't offer fitting rooms. However, if yours does, try on the items in question.

    Step 6

Take a measuring tape. If you have children in need of clothing items, record their measurements and take them with you. Measure clothing items in the thrift store to match their size. Once an item has been washed, the size isn't always "true".

    Step 7

Carry batteries with you. Thrift store will remove the batteries prior to placing them on the shelves, so there's not really a way to tell if the item works or not. Carry a few AA batteries with you and you can pop them in and check the toy while you're in the store.

    Step 8

Take knee highs or socks to the thrift store. Purchasing shoes from thrift stores can be tricky, but it's much easier to try those on before you make a decision. Keep a pair of knee highs in your purse so you can try on dress shoes. During the summer months, take socks along in case you find a good pair of closed toe shoes.

    Step 9

Buy books and magazines at the thrift store. Books and magazines are easily found in most thrift stores. If your children love to read, a thrift store is the place to buy books! Do you have cut and past projects for school? Magazines may run as little as 9 cents or as much as 25 cents each.

    Step 10

Wash everything you purchase from a thrift store. Always wash everything you've purchased from the thrift stores before putting it into circulation!

    Step 11

Ask about sales and coupons. Sign up for any coupons or flyers the thrift store may send out periodically to those on their mailing list

    Step 12

Good Luck remember to be extremely patiant!
1Decide if you're the sort of person who likes thrift store shopping. Thrift stores require a lot of rummaging, which can be time-consuming and tiring. Often they smell musty or are dusty, so if you have allergies, be sure to spend only short amounts of time visiting. Also, you won't always find an item in your size. You won't always find something you like, either. If you are someone who loves to rummage, would sacrifice a half day in pursuit of a bargain and enjoys the thrill of the hunt as much as the kill, then thrift store shopping is for you! You must have perseverance, determination, patience and grit.

2Decide what time is best for you to go. You need at least a spare hour, maybe two. Since rummaging requires energy, choose the time of day when you feel strong and energetic. Some stores are open at night or weekends. Nights are good because fewer people go then. Weekends are likely to be busier. Sales days are the busiest.3Try shopping with a friend who you trust so won't you get frustrated with the time you will be taking. It can help to get another opinion and you'll be less likely to leave the store with something that looks awful, or something that you don't actually like. If you're having absolutely no luck, it's good to have a friend along so you can show them all the humorously horrible things you find.4Enter the store of your choice. There are two ways to shop. The first is that you have come with an object in mind, for example, a pair of jeans. So head straight to the area where the jeans are and look with that in mind alone.5The second way is that you have no idea what you're looking for, as long as it fits, is gorgeous and is a total bargain. In this case, start at the beginning. It is always wise to choose one type of thing though - for example, focus on clothes rather than also trying to look at the books, china, toys and bikes etc. Unless the store is tiny, you'll wear yourself out and possibly over-buy.6Many thrift stores color code their clothes. This makes it easier for you to avoid colors that you don't like and not waste extra time. If the clothes are hangin
