What's the best way to apply perfume or body spray so that it lasts long?

I don't want the smell to be overpowering but right now, when I apply it, I'm pretty much the only one who can detect it.

Body spray is not a long-lasting fragrance and you would need to reapply throughout the course of the day as it loses its scent quickly.
Perfume is a much better investment, and be sure that it is actually eau de parfum and not eau de toilette. The best way to make it last is to layer it, so use the matching shower gel and body lotion before applying the perfume. Apply perfume at the pulse points (especially wrists, the crook of your arm and neck) and add a spritz to your hair too. If you layer your perfume with the matching scented products, you will be able to achieve a long-lasting effect that remains subtle and NOT overpowering, you want your perfume to whisper, never shout. Layering, therefore, is effective because you won't need to overdo the application of the actual eau de parfum. I think you'll be really pleased with the result if you use this technique.

wrists and neck are generally where you apply body spray to make it last with out being overpowering. and if you mean body spray like just spray the smell doesn't stay as long as actual perfume anyways.

Body sprays will not stay on long so you will have to keep reapplying as for perfumes from what i've been told you are supposed to apply it to areas where you can fell your heartbeat (wrists, the place on your neck where you can feel your heartbeat, and your chest). I am not sure how true this is but it has worked for me.

this sounds kinda weird but i heard to spray it on the upper thighs cuz somehow it comes through the rest of the body and dont rub your rists together after putting perfume on them bcuz it can break up the particles

The Body Shop has oil-based perfumes that last a lot longer than alcohol-based perfumes. I don't know why they last longer, but fragrance oils are longer lasting than fragrance mists. You could also try solid perfume. Also, try spraying it in your cleavage along with your pulse points (behind ears and on wrists). That'll last longer because it doesn't evaporate off as fast--it's covered in clothing.

Put it in the hair just above the hairline on the back of your neck. Hair holds fragrance the longest, just don't put any on the top layer of hair, because it can look greasy.

Put it on like right after you get out of the shower. Pat dry with a towel so you are kind of still moist and then you spray it on, your skin will absorb it better and will stick around longer
